Let us look at some of the dog training mistakes that should be avoided at all costs to ensure that your doggy behaves in a good way:

Not Setting Boundaries

Although dogs are traditionally considered to be man’s best friend they are wild at heart. The reason for that is their connection with the wolf pack dated thousands of years ago. Hence, it is important to set boundaries when you are training your furry pal. One of the best ways to set boundaries is through crate training. It keeps them away from danger and ensures that they are safe all the time. You can even gate certain areas in the house so that the pet does not have the freedom to roam.

Neglecting To Train Beyond The First Year

You have trained your furry pal diligently by teaching him important commands. But your work does not stop when the training reaches the end of the first year. Please remember that consistent training and reinforcement are the key to an obedient dog. By continuing to train them effectively you not only teach them new dynamic ways, but also stimulate their minds.

Allowing Your Pooch To Jump On Others

It requires a lot of dedication and hard work coupled with consistency to make your furry pal understand that it is inappropriate to jump on others. But if this behaviour is encouraged or overlooked during puppy-hood because it seems to be cute, then it will be much harder to break it once the habit has been developed. There are different ways to ensure that your tyke does not jump on others:

  • Leash him while greeting people
  • Ignore them when they jump and reward them when they sit still
  • Ask family members and friends to not pay attention to them when they are jumping and pet them when they are sitting still
  • Teach them commands like “down”, “no jump”, “sit” and “lay down”

Correcting More Than Praising

When try to correct the furry pal use these techniques:

  • Speak in a firm, deep voice when the pet is misbehaving, but never yell or scream
  • Always use a praise voice that is high-pitched, light and happy
  • If the pet misbehaves calm him down through the command “lie down” then take them gently by the collar and back legs. Place your hands firmly but gently on the neck and then give “time out” for a minute or two. Talk in a calming voice.
  • Whenever the doggy sits, stays down while greeting others or meets another furry pal in a friendly manner, give rewards and praise him.
